Samskrit words Sarpa and Naga are synonyms for snakes.
Sarpa means a serpent - a single headed snake.
NAga means, a snake with many heads.
As one knows, a human mind is a multi faceted entity. It is hived, has many attributes, partitions and layers. 'NAga' therefore, is metaphor for 'mind'.
An outwardly oriented mind, is a snake with raised hood and trailing body.
An inwardly turned mind is engrossed in the self.
A many headed snake, with its hood of attention, turned around.
Such a NAga is seat or couch for the self.
